How to Make a Futuristic Game Room
Friday, March 25th, 2011Having a home game room can be the pride of one’s domain, whether it be a old school bar set up or new age video arcade. People enjoy a lot of the same games, like Foosball or pool, so how do you make your game room stand apart while offering the same entertainment? When putting together different games, think about a common theme or aesthetic. You can buy furniture and modify it to fit this theme and make your room stand apart.
For instance, I decided I wanted a futuristic sci-fi themed game room. I love Foosball, so I started there first. Foosball tables don’t just come in wood or plastic. You can find them with chrome or diamond plated finishes. These game tables are perfect for modification because they really reflect custom lights well.
An easy way to modify a table is by using electroluminescent wire (or EL wire). They are thin and non intrusive, so they are perfect to line tables. You can purchase wire by the foot or in starter kits. Some battery packs even come with settings that will pulse the light at different frequencies. There are even packs that pulse to music. I recommend installing these in your tables if you like to listen to music in your futuristic room.
Since EL wire is flexible, you can use it for more than just outlining tables. I also use them to make patterns on the walls in my game room. Using nails or tacks, you can angle the wires. For example, one of my walls uses EL wire to make the space ships from Space Invaders. It gives a cool, retro sci-fi look to the room.
A lot of home game rooms feature a home bar, which can look really cool with the addition of EL wire. I use a blue strand across the shelves with my glasses. The light bounces around them giving a really cool effect. Installing sound activated packs around my sound system really adds life when I host parties in the home. You can put on your favorite tracks and watch the lights pulse.
With the all of the different battery packs and connectors, there’s no end to what you can build for your home room. Don’t be afraid to sketch your ideas on paper before building or buying. Run it by your friends to see what cool ideas you can come up with.By Frank McGavin
